Do clothes and items that are white look yellow? Are you seeing halos around lights when you drive at night?

These are some of the signs that you could have cataracts. As you age, cataracts only become more and more common. Keep reading to learn more about the most common cataract signs!

What is a Cataract?

When your eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy, it usually means that you have a cataract. This process occurs as a result of the aging process.

The lens is normally clear and easy to see through. But with cataracts, it can be like looking at the world through a fogged up window.

Having cataracts can make doing many activities difficult. Some of these include driving at night, sewing, reading, or trying to read facial expressions.

Here are the most common signs that you may be developing cataracts:

Trouble Driving at Night

If you have cataracts, it can be difficult to differentiate between dark and light. You may develop headaches from looking at headlights or streetlamps while driving at night.

Finally, some patients experience seeing halos around lights while they are driving at night.

Needing Stronger Light

If you are trying to complete a detail oriented task, you might need more or stronger light to be able to focus. Activities that you might need more light for include sewing and reading.

Increasing the amount of light might work in the beginning, but as your cataracts develop, it will not.

Vision Changes

Early on, cataracts start off small. They take time to develop, and may not affect your vision early on. But it’s as time goes on that your vision will begin becoming impacted.

To diagnose cataracts in their early stages, you need to have frequent eye exams. Some of the most common signs that you could have cataracts include cloudy, faded, or blurry vision.

Cataracts can make your eyes sensitive to light. Also, some patients see halos and glares around lights. Cataracts can make normal levels of light seem too strong.

Double Vision

Double vision in one or both eyes is a very common symptom of cataracts. Cataracts can make your lens foggy, making it difficult for light to enter your eye.

Due to this, you may experience double vision.

Color Look Faded

As cataracts grow and get bigger, sometimes they can cause colors to look more faded or have a yellow tint. For example, something you knew as neon yellow, might look pastel now.

You may also notice that things look muddier or like they are brown when they are not normally that color.

Needing Many Prescription Changes

When your cataracts grow, your vision changes as well. You can go from clearly seeing distances to requiring many new prescriptions.

This may make it difficult to even be able to see a street sign. Quick vision changes are a sign that you could have cataracts.

If your cataracts start to impact your life, then it might be time to talk to your eye doctor about cataract surgery.
